Grade 2–4—In these chapter books set in the Australian bush, friends Bonnie and Sam solve a mystery and spend lots of time on their horses. Sea Rescue finds the girls on a sheep farm. When they go out riding and get caught in a storm, they unexpectedly solve the mystery of Skull Rock, help with the capture of Abalone poachers, and become heroines as they rescue some drowning men. In Royal Show, they head for the Royal Horse Show with their riding teacher. While enjoying the competition, they manage to save a stolen, neglected pony that is soon reunited with its grateful owners. These stories are quick and enjoyable reads starring appealing, horse-crazy characters to whom young equestrians will relate. The colorful and detailed watercolors perfectly capture the girls’ lifestyles and adventures with their many equine friends.—Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA
