PreSchool-An androgynous toddler explores the sense of touch. The text asks the same questions on each double-page spread, substituting the names of different animals or insects: “Did you ever have a chick nestle in your lap? How did it feel? Puffy. Peeping. Fluffy. Sleeping.” Halpern’s minimal collage illustrations with bright, cheery background colors show the child holding or touching each creature. The large, sturdy pages make the book a good choice for storytime, one-on-one sharing, and when filling teacher requests for titles on one of the senses.

Tickly Prickly (26 pp.; $9.95; Jun. 30; 0-694-01239-4): Textured collages invite preschoolers to consider the sense of touch. In this Growing Tree entry, Becker uses simple rhymes to describe the feel of different creatures. “Tickly prickly. Fly away quickly,” she says of a ladybug, while a toad feels “Muddy, bumpy. Warty, lumpy.” Illustrations of the fuzzy wool of a sheep, smudgy wings of a moth, and opalescent scales of a fish all appear enticingly tactile, due to Halpern’s astute use of unusual paper in the collages.
