Written and illustrated by a mother-and-daughter team, this tale of a magical quilt that unleashes a series of dream adventures doesn’t quite hit the mark. Alex, spending a week with a great-aunt, sleeps beneath the quilt, which every night dispatches him into a different fantasy. Princesses, dragons, and animals and insects that talk figure prominently; settings include a world beneath the sea and a medieval play. The text, apparently aiming for an old-fashioned storybook feel, is both overlong and overwritten (“Alex stared at her, round-eyed, but he remembered the young princess and a feeling of bravery swelled his chest”), and the various episodes consequently lose momentum. Amy Zerner’s imaginative collages fare better; resembling lush, Victorian valentines, they may appeal to fans of Michael Hague. Previous works by the Zerners include Scheherazade’s Cat and Zen ABC. Ages 5-up.

Grade 2-4?Beginning with a richly detailed cover depicting a Victorian-style crazy quilt, this mother-daughter collaboration is a visual treat. The writing is uneven, though, with an overuse of vague adverbs such as “slightly” and “rather.” The Zerners tell the story of young Alex’s visit to great-aunt Rachel’s house by the sea and of his nightly dreams that are inspired by the family quilt under which he sleeps. Accompanied by a dragon and a cat, the boy encounters spiders, gnomes, evil weasels, and, of course, princesses. As the train taking him to his aunt’s house passes windmills, and as he imagines it as “…a great animal puffing along, filling the air with smoke and sparks,” readers may conclude that the story takes place much earlier in this century; a later mention of milk cartons, however, confuses the issue. The story line echoes Katharine Pyle’s Counterpane Fairy (Dutton, 1928; o.p.), in which a fairy transports a sick child to fantastic adventures inspired by a patchwork quilt. The generously sized pages are sprinkled with small, jewellike collages and illustrations; full-page renditions of sections of the quilt are scattered throughout; and deep-blue chapter divisions feature smiling moons and suns. The slow pace and old-fashioned language will not engage children, though the book may intrigue nostalgic adults.?Ruth S. Vose, San Francisco Public Library

Ages 5^-9. This mother-and-daughter team have produced a beautiful, old-fashioned storybook that is just right for bedtime reading or gift giving. A somewhat apprehensive Alex travels to his aunt’s house near the sea for his first, long, away-from-home visit. Wrapped up each night in his great-great grandfather’s patchwork quilt, Alex dreams an adventure related to the patchwork piece he notices right before he falls asleep. Together with Daisy the cat, he meets a talking dragon, saves a beautiful princess, finds Father Neptune’s trident, and has several other not-too-scary adventures before his week ends and he returns home. This is not a picture book in the usual sense. Amy Zerner’s illustrations are reproduced from fragments of an actual quilted fabric collage she created. Chris Sherman

Review

THE DREAM QUILT, by the mother/daughter duo Amy Zerner and Jessie Spicer Zerner, is a wonderful book for children (except I loved it, too!). The story is about a boy from the city who goes to visit his aunt who lives near the ocean. He is worried about sleeping so she covers him with a dream quilt.

Each night the boy sleeps and dreams and in the morning a patch of the quilt reminds him of his dream. I don’t want to give the whole story away, but I will tell you there really is a quilt made by the authors. It shows the patches in the dreams and is touring bookstores with the book. If you like to read to children, be sure to look for this wonderful book. — Quilting Magazine, August 1996

This book was so beautifully illustrated that I was almost afraid to let my young nephew handle it for fear he might mar it with chocolate smears or drops of lemonade. But a truly wonderful children’s book like this deserves to be lovingly handled, so I let him at it.

THE DREAM QUILT is the delightful story of Alex, a young boy who goes to visit his aunt on Cape Cod. While there, he is charmed by all he sees on the beach and in the surrounding landscape. But at night, his dreams allow him entrance to a truly magical world. The quilt his aunt has placed upon his bed contains a rich array of colors, textures, symbols, and pictures, and each night before he goes to bed, Alex focuses on one small part of the quilt. That part inevitably finds its way into his dreams of dragons and mystical forests and strange but benevolent people. At the end of his week-long visit, Alex looks forward to visiting his aunt and the dream quilt soon, but knows he will always have those dreams inside him. This is a terrific book that emphasizes the creative power of dreams in a way that is accessible to children. THE DREAM QUILT may help children understand where nightmares come from and may also help them to eliminate their fear of dreams that seem frightening because they are not understood. — New Age Retailer, Spring 1995

From the Inside Flap

When Alex arrives at his Aunt Rachel’s house for a week by the sea, he’s not sure what to expect. The train, the house, the garden, the large climbing tree in the backyard are all new experiences for this urban child, away from home alone for the very first time. But even more exciting is the mysterious quilt from his great-great grandfather’s sea chest. Its magical patches shine as Alex falls asleep, leading him into adventure after adventure.

The illustrations are squares from the magic quilt, rich collages by artist Amy Zerner. The stories are by Jessie Spicer Zerner, Amy’s mother and collaborator.

From talking dragons to a land of milk and cheese that delights Daisy the cat, Alex’s companion, the stories of The Dream Quilt will spark the imagination. Perfect for bedtime reading, it will encourage resourcefulness and independence, and will remind children that “there are adventures everywhere and any time.”
