PreS–Never mind that the pouting face on the cover of this book is that of a young fox–this preschooler’s concerns will strike at the heart of every parent and child sharing the story. When Anna arrives home from school full of plans for her afternoon, she encounters a grumpy Mama who says no to everything her daughter wants. Seeking revenge, the child spends the rest of the day spurning her mother and wanting only Daddy. This technique seems to suit Anna just fine until bedtime, when the ritual of going to sleep is missing the key elements of a story and a kiss from her mother. When Mama appears at the door, all is forgiven, making way for a satisfying conclusion. Simple sentences tell this universal story and make it ring true. The illustrations feature thick black lines and an earthy palette of tans, greens, and a foxlike reddish brown. Despite the heavy lines, the characters’ emotions shine through on their faces and in their body language: Anna’s peevish expression complete with hard eyes and crossed arms; Daddy’s astonishment over this sudden change in roles; and Mama’s sadness at her little girl’s rejection. Perfect for storytime and bedtime, this book will be a popular read-aloud choice.–Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY
