PreS-In this picture book aimed at preschool boys, each spread names a rite of passage (using the toilet, graduating from booster seat to seat belts), and then enlists the refrain, “Billy is a big boy. How about you? Do you-[fill in the activity]? Are you a big boy too?” The events vary in age suitability. Giving up bottle drinking and riding a tricycle seem disparate for this catalog and it’s doubtful that many parents will consider trading a pacifier for a lollipop appropriate. The toddler-flavored text fades further when compared to the drawings. Dappled scenes of tousled, towhead Billy create an endearing personality, contagious with joie de vivre. The simple indoor backgrounds are especially effective in providing character details. Unfortunately, according to his birthday cake, Billy is five, but his tally of accomplishments doesn’t match his chronological age.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
