Why Deep Water Culture?
Deep Water Culture is a highly efficient hydroponic system where plant roots are suspended in oxygen-rich, nutrient-infused water. This method offers rapid growth, healthy root systems, and an easy-to-maintain setup ideal for both beginners and experienced growers.
What is LECA?
LECA stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate. These are small, round clay pellets that have been heated to high temperatures, causing them to expand and become porous. In hydroponics, LECA provides excellent root support, promotes aeration, and allows for even water and nutrient distribution. It also reduces the risk of overwatering and root rot.
Key Benefits:
- Accelerated Growth: Nutrients are directly available to roots for faster development.
- Consistent Hydration: Roots remain constantly in contact with water, reducing drought stress.
- Optimal Oxygen Supply: Air stones or diffusers keep the water oxygenated, preventing root rot.
- Nutrient Efficiency: Minimal waste compared to soil growing.
- Clean & Pest-Resistant: Soil-free environment reduces the risk of soil-borne pests and diseases.
Care Tips for DWC Systems
1. Water & Nutrients
- Maintain water level so the bottom of the LECA-filled pots are submerged.
- Use a balanced hydroponic nutrient solution; follow manufacturer’s instructions for dilution.
- Filtered or distilled water is best for plant health, but tap water is also acceptable.
- Check and top off water regularly to replace what plants absorb and what evaporates.
2. Aeration
- Ensure the air pump and air stone are functioning 24/7 to keep water oxygenated.
3. Cleaning & Maintenance
- Thoroughly rinse LECA between uses.
- If mineral buildup becomes severe, LECA can be boiled in water to loosen and remove deposits.
- Every 2–4 weeks, empty and refill the reservoir with fresh nutrient solution.
- Water can be removed from the reservoir using either a bucket and hose siphon or an electric transfer pump.
- Cover the top of the reservoir with aluminum foil to reflect light back at the plants and reduce possible algae growth inside the reservoir.
Quick Care Summary
Water/Nutrients: Keep LECA pot bottoms submerged; refresh solution every 2–4 weeks. Use filtered or distilled water when possible; tap water is acceptable.
Aeration: Continuous air supply via pump and stone.
Clean: Rinse LECA thoroughly between uses; boil if mineral buildup is severe.
Water Removal: Use a siphon or electric transfer pump for easy reservoir emptying.
Light Control: Cover reservoir top with aluminum foil to reduce algae and reflect light.
