What is Semi-Hydroponics?
Semi-hydroponics is a growing method that uses LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) instead of soil. Plants sit in containers with a small water reservoir at the bottom. The roots wick up water and nutrients as needed, providing a steady supply while reducing the risk of overwatering.
Benefits of Semi-Hydroponics
- Healthier Roots – LECA provides aeration and reduces root rot risk.
- Consistent Moisture – Reservoir ensures plants always have access to water.
- Cleaner Growing System – Less mess and fewer soil-borne pests.
- Reusable Medium – LECA can be rinsed and reused multiple times.
- Easy to Monitor – Roots and water levels are visible.
Care Instructions
- Watering: Keep the bottom of the LECA-filled pot just submerged in the reservoir so roots can wick up moisture.
- Fertilizing: Use a hydroponic fertilizer mixed according to label directions.
- Reservoir Maintenance: Empty and refill with fresh water and fertilizer mixture every 2–3 weeks.
- LECA Care: Rinse LECA thoroughly between uses. If mineral buildup becomes severe, LECA can be boiled to loosen and remove deposits.
